Locals Dominate 2024 Rattler Run

Medicine Hat and area runners occupied the lion’s share of the top placing at the 45th Annual MHC Rattler Run on Saturday.

MHC Rattlers runners Becky Ross and Maddy Scrimger went 1-2 in the women’s 10 km. Ross stopped the clock at 41:25, 59 seconds ahead of Scrimger. This was Ross’ third consecutive victory in the Rattler Run. Heloise Shrives was third.

The men’s 10 km winner was Coaldale’s Rob Lja. He recorded a time of 39:37. A pair of local half-centurions, Micheal Arequion and Darryl Smith, placed second and third respectively.

Quinn Haldorson of Medicine Hat scorched the 5 km course, posting a time of 15:56, 64 seconds clear of runner up Gideon Rutto of Lethbridge. Keegan Kolody placed third.

The women’s 5 km race was the closest race of the day with less than 20 seconds separating top three runners. Kierra Grant took the victory in a time of 22:02, while Jasmine Salmon and Miriam Wyton were second and third.

This year marked the debut of the Mascot Race. It was a hotly contested affair with the Daniel’s Dip Ferry taking the W over the Maverick’s Monty. MHC’s Rowdy hung on for the bronze.

The oldest finisher this year was 90 year’s young Rose Fortier who covered the 3 km course in under 52 minutes.

A total of 463 runners and walkers took part in the races under overcast and cool conditions.
